“The Horrendous Thing that Shaped Your Life”

Batman

Nobody has a perfect life. We live on planet earth where there is no such thing as perfection. When I look back on my own life I see 2 things that affected me in a major way, things that had to be overcome in my pursuit of God, and it was God that enabled me to overcome, so that I could pursue him more. I will share those 2 things shortly, but first I want to talk more about “GOTHAM”. Because some of you still don’t get it, and if you read this article, maybe you will “get it”.

If we take the fictional story of Gotham and make a life metaphor of it, certain things immediately rise to the top. Of course, the horrendous thing a boy experienced as his two parents were shot dead right in front of his eyes. This was a young Bruce Wayne, and it shaped the course of his life. This was a defining moment for him. For many people in our day and age, this might not be fictional. Their parent, or parents, died in a violent way when they were young, maybe even right in front of their eyes.

Bruce’s parents were not themselves violent, but violence came upon them. Some of you may have had parents involved in bad things and violence came upon them as a result of that, but still…which fork of the road will you choose? To become one who fights against evil for the sake of the weak and innocent, or one who decides to turn to evil, because of the violence that invaded your young life?

I want to stay in this time period of the young Bruce Wayne, because Hollywood has allowed us to do so, and given us another hero in Detective Gordon. It has been interesting watching very imaginative writers create this world of a young Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, Ivy, and others, including Detective Gordon. Of course I am talking about the T.V. series “Gotham”, and if you haven’t seen it, you might want to check it out.

Gotham was such a “Snake Pit”! And into this world comes a young, brave, heroic, and honest Detective. Can he be corrupted? Can he be broken? Can he be bribed? Can we entice him from his high-ideas to join us in our bed of snakes? Oh what a world of evil and corruption Detective Gordon takes on, before there is any Batman to help him.

Detective Jim Gordon. Talk about peer pressure! The police department is so corrupted that he is practically taking on the whole mafia alone! And the Penguin comes to him saying: “There’s a war coming, Jim. There will be so much blood in the streets!” In our day today, there is a war already raging between God and evil.

Yes I said God and evil, not good and evil. There are plenty of good people fighting evil in the way good people do, BUT… God’s people are called to fight evil in a different way, in a Priestly way, and if you claim to be a God people, have you obeyed that way? Or will there be so much blood in the streets, AND ON YOUR HANDS.

There is so much more I could say about this, but I believe I will let the Holy Spirit finish that conversation. As for the 2 horrendous things in my life? I am fortunate, raised in a Christian family my “horrendous events” would not be considered “horrendous” by most people, but they did have a major affect on me and the course of my life. So I will quickly share these 2 things in very “short form”, so as not to bore you.

ONE: I was popular in school until the fifth grade, when my parents moved to an isolated farm in the country. I was so isolated that I became extremely introverted. I didn’t know how to talk to people. Bad part was, I was comfortable that way and didn’t want to change. I didn’t realize how much this was affecting me in a bad way. I was deathly afraid of speaking in front of people. So…when it was time to graduate I should have went to college and probably become a teacher, or journalist. Something to that affect, but I was so afraid of standing in front of people, how could I be a teacher? So I eventually wound up a truck driver. Go figure. The point is, when God started moving on me to teach his word? Wow…I’m telling you, you don’t know how real the power of God became to me when I finally broke free of my introversion. People today are amazed I was ever an introvert to the extreme, but I was, and God delivered me as I obeyed him. There were some good points to my seclusion. I probably would not be the “spiritual” teacher I am today, had it not been for my isolation in nature with God. But had I not fought the battle to overcome my greatest fear, I would have missed so much God was offering me.

TWO: As a young man riding my bicycle down a two-lane blacktop, which I did a lot of bike riding to escape the farm, but one day, I just happened upon a very colorful magazine lying in the middle of the road, pages flapping in the breeze, and as I rolled by, I looked down, and saw it was a “PLAYBOY Magazine”. I know I should have kept on rolling, but I didn’t, and thus began a porno addiction which led to stealing, because I was too young to buy. They say Prono is an addiction as strong as cocaine. I’ve never had the drug, but I know it was only the power of God, seeking more of God, that finally delivered me from the Porno. It was not an easy battle, but I chose to, with the help of God, fight evil, rather than join it.

In conclusion: The personal story I am currently writing called: “Gotham”, should be a must read for every Christian who considers themselves “average”, but wonders what might be possible if they truly surrendered their will completely to God. For one thing, God will COVER you with his anointing, and the average Christian can be a Caped Crusader for God, fighting evil not in the way good people do, but in “the way” that ONLY God’s people can do.

Christians were originally called people of “The Way”.  Do you get it now?

“The Encounter II” > FLAPLESS

“THE LITTLE BIRD THAT COULDN’T” > CHAPTER THREE

That night Flapless snuggled up in a pile of leaves that were trapped against a fallen tree. As he stared up into the starry sky he began to question the events of his day. “Did I really hear the wind talking to me? I passed several trees today and never heard the voice even once, not even a peep! What if I’m wrong? Will I find food up in the mountains? Do worms live there? Is the ground too hard and cold?” his thoughts continued in endless chaotic circles of fear and doubt.

“I never knew the wind could speak, even though, like the wind had said, have their not been Prophets who have said it is so? And have we not ignored them because we thought they were imagining things? Have we not laughed at them, just like some have laughed at me?”

“What is a Prophet, anyway?” he considered. “The Book of the Ancient Ways says they are a person who hears the voice of God, and speaks of invisible things of another kingdom. Sometimes they even tell us the future! Wait a minute, if I’m hearing such a voice, does that make me a Prophet? Or possibly a Prophet in training? Could the mountain be my great test?” Flapless was very lost in his thoughts when a voice from above suddenly interrupted!

“Hey, bro! What are you doing down there? You want to get eaten?”

“A voice!” Flapless shouted to himself, but then he thought, “Hey, bro? What kind of voice is that?” So as he looked in the direction of the voice, he spotted a small bird, a very small bird, much smaller than he, for it was a wren, and the little bird was perched on a limb above him.

“Oh! Hi, up there! I did not know you was there.”

“Yeah, I get missed a lot, but are you planning on sleeping down there?” the little wren asked.

“Yes. I have no choice. You see, it’s kind of a long story, but my wings do not work and I cannot fly. My name says it all, they call me, Flapless.”

“Flapless,” the wren repeated, “OH, I get it! So sorry for your condition, but since I am perching here tonight, I will try to keep an eye open for danger, and I can give you warning.”

“That is very kind of you, little wren. And what is your name?”

“My name is, Goliath, because I don’t like thinking small. I drove my parents so crazy with my wild ideas that they just started calling me, Goliath, you know, the giant?”

“Yes, I know of whom you speak. It is one of the stories in the Book of Ancient Ways. The same book that speaks of Prophets and hearing voices in the wind.”

“Yes, the same book,” the wren agreed.

Flapless noticed that Goliath seemed to be studying him closely, before finally asking, “Are you a starling, or a raven?”

“I’m a raven,” he answered.

“Hmmm,” the little wren sounded.

“I’ve heard that before,” Flapless thought.

“You know, I’m a bit of a student of the Ancient Book, and it is unfortunate that your kind has gotten such a bad rap in our times.”

“What do you mean?” Flapless asked.

“You know. All that stuff about witches and sorcery.”

“Oh, yeah, all that. I’ve never even seen a witch. I probably wouldn’t know one if I saw one.”

“If people studied the Ancient Book more, they would know how silly it all is. Just because ravens are listed as one of the unclean birds, I mean, aren’t we all? That is what salvation is about, right? And people seem to forget that our mighty eagle brother is listed as an unclean bird, too.”

“Actually, you ravens have a pretty good record in the Good Book of Ancient Ways. Noah sent one of your forefathers out of the ark first, because you are a stronger bird. The dove couldn’t handle the hardship. But your forefather bravely went forth, and stayed out much sooner than the dove.”

“Also, God chose another one of your forefathers to feed a very special man named, Elijah. And they faithfully took care of Elijah for as long as possible. And Jesus even used the raven when he spoke of taking no thought for your life, and what you will eat or wear, but seek first the kingdom of God.”

“Wow, you really do know the Ancient Book of God’s Word! Can I share with you the details of my journey? Perhaps you can help me have a better understanding, because earlier today I heard a voice in the wind, and that is how I ended up on the road to the mountains, for I was going to take the other path.”

“A voice in the Wind? Oh my. Yes, this will be very interesting. Please tell me all!”

“Well, starting from the beginning, I left home because I did not fit in, and I decided to go on a great quest in search of answers.” And so Flapless began to share every detail of his story with his new friend, Goliath.

The crickets chirped in the background as he described his great torment of having wings that do not work, and all his fellow birds who had hurt him with insulting names. He told of the owl who who who could not help him, and his many weeks of walking, walking, and walking. Until he finally had his encounter with “the Voice”, which he thought was the tree talking and he had gone crazy. But thank goodness it had turned out to be the wind speaking to him as it blew through the leaves of the tree. Then there was the turtle and his advice to listen to the wind and take the road to the mountains. Now here he was.

“I think I saw your turtle friend on the way here,” the wren said. “He was camped at a rock by a big tree.”

“Yes, that would be the one, but surely he was not right by the tree?”

“Well, it was a few feet away,” Goliath confirmed.

“Yes, that would be him. He is old and only has three legs.”

“Three legs?” Goliath repeated. “You know, I have seen something called a wheel. Some one should attach a wheel where his missing leg is, and it would probably help him a lot.”

“A wheel?” Flapless thought. “You really do think outside the box, don’t you.”

“Oh, yes, I guess I just did it again, didn’t I. Birds are not supposed to think of things like that.”

Goliath’s last statement was followed by a few minutes of silence, as both were lost in their own thoughts. The crickets never stopped chirping, and the stars never stopped shining as the two kept each other company. But finally, Goliath began to talk again.

“So the Wind spoke to you, huh. That is not a small thing, Flapless. And he said your condition is a great blessing?”

“Yes, but I’m afraid I don’t agree with that part. It has brought me a lot of pain and sadness. I have left my home. I have no friends. No place to lay my head. And I weary of all this walking. Now it is about to get even harder as I begin hiking up the side of this great mountain. I am afraid I might give out. What if I do not have the heart to make this great journey?”

“Hmmm, but you are a raven,” the little wren pointed out, and then added, “A bird for hard times. A bird that was first to leave the ark into the new world, and the bird that fed a Prophet during a time of famine and drought. Perhaps the Wind knows that you do have the heart?”

“He said he was All-Knowing,” Flapless added as he considered the little wrens words.

“Yes. That would seem to agree with the Book of Ancient Ways, but I never thought about it before. If this is true, then why do I fight the Wind?” Goliath asked out loud.

“What do you mean?” Flapless asked.

“Well, my wings work, and I use them for a few things. One, to get off the ground. Two, if I am flying with the Wind, I use them to go faster. Three, I use them if I decide to go ‘against’ the Wind, or in any way ‘counter’ to it. But I am beginning to ask myself, if the Wind is All-Knowing, why would I want to go faster than the Wind carries me, or counter to it in any way?”

“Hmmm,” Flapless found himself saying. “I think I see what you mean.” Then he considered that he could not believe he had just said, “Hmmm.”

“What Kind of Warrior?”

QUESTION: DO I HAVE A SOUL?

Why is that such an important question? It is important, it is so very important, because if we all do have a soul, then we actually are “eternal beings” whose existence does not end when the body dies.

And why is that so important? Because if we are “eternal”, then there really is a lot at stake! I mean, think about it. We are so conditioned to think of our lives as mortal, and temporary, but what if it is not? And what if there really are things worth fighting for in the next life? What kind of warrior do you want to be?

It is true that the Theory of Evolution and the Word of God are diametrically opposed. Almost the whole point of the Bible is a message from God saying, “You are not an animal. You are made in my image. Do not live like an animal, but imitate God, your Creator.”

Let me present this as evidence. Animals are purely instinctive. Genesis chapter one says over and over again, that he created everything “after their kind”, until it gets to man, and then it says something very different. So what does that mean?

Well, it means that a dog has always been a dog, and will always be a dog, and will always do dog things. It means a beaver will always build beaver dams, and elephants will always spray water with their trunk. Tigers will always hunt. Lions will always roar. Contrary to evolution, they do not change, but they perform as they were created to perform. Animals that have been trained to do certain things, always had the ability to be trained that way. Ten Thousand years ago, a dog was still a dog. It may not have been tamed yet, but it was still a dog, capable of being trained.

But what of man? As evidence I present that scripture says we were created in God’s image, and God is a Creator. Ever wonder why man creates, and animals do not? Man will always invent, create, design, imagine, dream, build, and progress, because he has his original Father’s image in him. It has been distorted by the fall into sin, and that is why not everything we create is good. We also create evil, but we cannot help ourselves from creating. You could say, it’s in our DNA. Obviously, it is not in the DNA of animals. I have not seen a beaver yet, that invented and installed a solar panel for his home of sticks and mud.

Dogs never ask, “Why am I here?” They are just here to be a dog. That fulfills their purpose, but man continually asks that question. Animals do not have a conscience. Oh, they may be afraid if they know they have done something that you punished them for before. They can be “trained”, but they do not have a conscience.

Man has a sense of right and wrong. We have a conscience that we can violate. We ask the question, “Why?” And, “How did I get here?” And, “What am I supposed to do with my life?” We search for MEANING! We hunger for PURPOSE! We are no more related to animals than a rock is related to a leaf on a tree. However, we do show many traits of God, even as blurred as that image may be.

So now we are back to our original question, “Do I have a soul? Am I eternal? What is at stake? Eternity? What kind of warrior do I want to be? Is there such a thing as a spiritual warrior?” Of course there is, and we would do well to decide what kind of warrior we want to be.

This is just a quick article to get some mental digestive juices flowing. Expect more to come, when the mood hits me. In the meantime, if you want more just drop down a little ways to “Love’s Warrior”. It’s some good stuff to chew on, but only a good starting place for where I am going.

PARABLE:

ONCE UPON A TIME, there was a man who wanted to build a house, but he had no tools. So he decided he would invent, and create a tool to build his house, and he would call it a hammer, and so he did. However, when he started to build his house the hammer said it did not want to be a hammer, and simply refused! So the man explained, “I have no use for you if you do not want to be a hammer, so I will give you some time to figure out what you’re meant to be, but if you run out of time, then I will cast you away.” So the man managed to salvage enough material from the original hammer to make another hammer, and they went on to build their house.

<<<<<<<>>>>>>>

Hope you enjoyed the parable and understand what it means. The recommended reading for this month is “LOVE’S WARRIOR”, which follows this short writing. It is a copy of something I wrote many moons ago, and I have picked it out to be my featured article this month. I am currently working on writing another book, and also reading many books as I am in deep study for this one. So I’m not writing as much on the blogsite, but I have many already written articles that I think deserve to have the chance for a second look.

As far as our “Help Bill Fight Cancer Yard Sale”, it has brought in $240.00 to date, and all of it has gone to help Bill. Praise the Lord! It feels good to be in the action!

SO IF YOU HAVE NEVER READ IT, PLEASE CHECK OUT “LOVE’S WARRIOR”, AND ENJOY!
