I was having a discussion with a friend recently, about evolution. We are friends in spite of our differences, even as this discussion was once again confirming. Of course he mentioned the similarities of man to ape and how there is only like one chromosome difference. I told him that didn’t mean anything, dogs are very similar to cats in many ways, but that don’t mean a dog came from a cat, or vise versa. Or a horse from a cow. We went round and round a little bit. I mentioned that supposedly Darwin himself questioned his theory towards the end of his life. He said that was a lie, he never did. I did a little research and learned it was Lady Hope who made the claim, a very religious and devout woman who did not have a track record of lying, but Darwin’s family flat-out denies the claim, and therefore, we just don’t know, but I did learn that Darwin was quoted in his latter days saying this in 1879:
“I have never been an atheist in the sense of denying the existence of God.”(Is that taught in our schools along with the theory?)
It was after our discussion that I realized it is really not about physical similarities, chromosomes, how smart an ape might be capable of becoming, not even if he learns algebra and builds a house one day. Scripturally speaking, it has nothing to do with any of that. It was one of those “aha!” moments for me. A sudden revelation, and once again, I learned something.
God gives us the answer way back in the beginning, in Genesis. I will try to condense this for the sake of speed, but I don’t think you will have any problem following what I’m about to say. The first point is that Genesis chapter one makes it very plain that God made every animal “after his kind”. This is repeated over and over. Example:
“And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.” (Gen. 1:24)
This phrase, “after his kind”, is spoken over and over and over again, until it comes time to create man, and then very different words are used. Now God says:
“And God said, Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness:…” (Gen 1:26a)
No. This is not yet my point. Here is what really happened, in detail, when God created man. (Gen. 2:7)
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground,… and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;… and he became a living soul.”
Notice three steps! Not one or two, but three! 1.) His body formed from the dust of the ground. 2.) Breathes into his nostrils the breath of life! This is where God is imparting “spirit” into Adam! Life! 3.) And he became a living “soul”! There is no record of anything like this with any animal. Now add to this to what Jesus said in (Matt. 16:26):
“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
So what am I saying here? The part that makes man different is the possession of an eternal “SOUL”! And Jesus said, don’t lose your soul! We are made in the image of God, three parts, body, spirit, and “soul”! Both the body of man and animals go back to the dust of the earth, it is the soul that makes man “not an animal”.
Now this led to some interesting spiritual conclusions as I continued to follow this line of thinking. It is Satan who wants to reduce man to living like animals. The flesh, in all of its forms, the lust of the flesh, can so easily lead man astray from following his soul after God, to living in his flesh like an animal. If there was ever a doctrine spawned from hell to convince man he is an animal, it is the “THEORY” of evolution.
It is the “soul” that makes man “not an animal”!
Lust is the way of the animal and love is the way of God. True love leads to commitment between two people, animal lust leads to sex for the sake of sex, not love. To convince me of evolution, you would have to prove I have no “soul” to lose, or that an ape does have a soul. It is not about anything physical, it is about everything spiritual.
Man can live like an animal if he wants to, and lose his soul. I have seen people who live that way. Most people, because they have a soul and conscience, try not to live as an animal even if they may think they evolved from one. The soul in us makes a difference even when we don’t believe in it! But Jesus said, don’t lose your soul.
It is not about anything physical, it is about everything spiritual!
Romans chapter one adds a very interesting light to this. I’ll use “Revised Standard Version” for simpler understanding.
(Romans 1:22-23) “Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles.”
Man wanting to be animals is not new. It goes way back. But as a result of the previous verse, the next two verses become even more interesting. First I want to look at verse 25, and then we will add verse 24 to it.
(vrs 25) “because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshipped and served the CREATURE rather than the CREATOR, who is blessed forever! Amen.”
And so here we are again, with a large number of our population wanting to serve the “creature”, rather than our “Creator”. We believe in the “creature”! We do not believe in the “Creator”, nor will we serve him! (Now for verse 24.)
(vrs 24)Therefore God gave them up in the lust of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,…”
(vrs 28) “And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct.” ( The King James says “reprobate” mind.)
(vrs 26) “For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged the natural relations for unnatural, and men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error.”
Yes, we can choose to live like animals. It is not the way God created us, nor is it his desire for us, but to not live as an animal means we are willing to accept certain rules of conduct. Did you notice that refusing to acknowledge God as our Creator lead people towards unnatural sexual behaviour? Yes, this would include homosexuality. Is this a sign of our time? Is this why so many people claim to be born this way? Is it just coincidence that the more we seem to deny the existence of God, the more we seem to see an increasing amount, and an increasing boldness in homosexual behaviour, to do that which is against nature?
The Bible instructs us to walk in the Spirit, not the flesh. (Galatians 5:16-17)
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would.”
They are opposed to each other! King James says they are contrary to each other. There is a portion of our society who will look for any excuse to justify their animal behaviour. God is completely against us living as animals. The whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation is about man not being an animal and not living as an animal! They were made after their kind! (Genesis 1!) We have in us the seed to be the children of God! Animals do not have that! They would trade with us in an instant if they had the chance! What a great gift to be made in the image of God and we would throw it away to say we are just a bunch of highly evolved apes? No thanks! I know a bum deal when I see one! The devil offers his deals in a very pretty package, but what’s inside is rotten to the core!
No. I don’t care if apes learn to wear clothes and talk on facebook, the answer does not lie in the physical, the answer lies in the spirit, something called a soul. Jesus said, do not lose your soul. Do not choose to be an animal. Do not choose the creation over the Creator. So once again we are back to “faith”. We are forced to come to God in spirit, or not at all. We are forced to listen to that still voice inside and decide what we believe is true. I cannot “prove” mine, and you cannot “prove” yours. We will come to God in Spirit and in truth, or we will not come to him at all, and we will lose our soul, and then we can be the animal we wanted to be.
I choose to honor my Creator and not be an animal, and therefore not live as an animal. I choose to walk after the Spirit in my life, and choose the “high road”, that leads to much better things. I choose to live by certain rules of conduct, and seek higher things in my spiritual potential. Animals do not have spiritual potential. They are what they are and animals will be in heaven. The lion will lie down with the lamb, but they will never be the Bride of Christ!
So the next time I’m at the zoo, I will look deep into the eyes of an ape and I will say, “I am not you, and you are not me. Praise God!”
