Wrapped in mystery and secret things, the Caped Crusader overlooks his Gotham? What might a Priest of Christ have in common? Read on if you dare.

THE ENCOUNTER III > This story is written as if fiction, but it is not. Fellow Christian, have you heard a call in your heart saying: “Gotham needs you?” Has God challenged you to take your city and your neighborhood very “personal”? That is what happened to me. I am caped in God’s Covering, and Indianapolis is my Gotham. Who’s yours?
The computer screen still glowed in front of him as Don relived that night with Chris. It was very simple and basic. How has Church become so complicated? After that first contact, Chris had begun to win some favor with the Apartment complex. This was a “Point of Pain” area, so it was not hard to find ways of helping, and showing the love of God. He turned his minivan into a food pantry, and now, once a month, he was allowed to come to their monthly meeting in the Apartment Community Center and set up his food pantry. After the one hour meeting, people were allowed to sign up and come through the tables one by one.
Don remembered how the place was all abuzz when he entered the building that night. The tables were set up with food, but the meeting had not started yet. In the meantime he found Chris talking to a man named Charlie, and he was showing Charlie God’s plan of salvation by using a special phone app. Charlie found the diagrams very interesting, but was not ready to make a full commitment to Christ at this time. When Chris got called away to other things, Don found himself left there with Charlie, and an open opportunity.
“Charley”, he began, “Do you know that the Bible says God loves you?”
“Yes,” he answered. Charlie was well aware of what the Bible said about this.
“Do you understand that the Bible says God loves you so much that he was willing to come and die for you?”
“Yes,” the answer came again.
“Do you love God, Charley?” Don found himself asking.
“Yes,” Charley said.
“Well then, the question becomes, do you love him enough to give your life to him, like he did for you?”
Charley was very quiet. It seemed apparent he had accepted Christ many years ago but had drifted far away. Don could feel a heaviness on Charley’s spirit as he thought about these things, but he was not ready, so he prayed a short prayer with him, and knew God would speak more to Charley that night, as he pillowed his head.
After that, Chris and he had stood in the back for an hour while the meeting went on. A chair to sit would have been nice, but somehow that never happened and Don was happy just to be there. After the meeting people signed a card and lined up at the first table where Chris and Don stood waiting to pray. As each person approached and handed their card to Chris, he asked them, “Do you have a need we can pray about with you?” Amazingly, most of them did. Many of the people had already begun to look upon Chris as their Pastor, and they called him Pastor Chris.
Don was still amazed at the power he felt when praying for these people. How quickly words had come. How precise had been the prayers. How powerful they had felt, God doing a quick work, one by one, as Chris would pass a person to Don, and then he would take the next, and so it went one by one, powerful, precise, anointed. God was there! He was almost tangible!
“Did that all really happen?” he asked himself again as he sat in the glow of the blank computer screen. Yes it did. He knew it did, but still could hardly believe it. So different than what goes on in the comfortable and safe confines of the Church building. Simple Christianity, in a place of needs, meeting needs, both physical and spiritual, and God showed up in a special way in that difficult environment. The woman whose child had been killed in the playground, confessed she still wrestled with depression over it, and Don watched as Chris prayed for her. You could feel her sincere gratitude.
Big changes were coming Don’s way. He had answered God’s call to take his neighborhood and city very “personally”, like a Batman saying: “Gotham needs me!” But what would that mean? What would be the personal price to pay? Where would it lead? What kind of training? It is not like in the movies where everything happens in a nice package of two or three hours. Gaining an open door to an apartment complex, a community, a workplace, the lost, the streets, can take many months of prayer, training, and sacrifice. Are we willing? Are we willing to say, “Here am I, Lord.”, when God is asking, “Who will go?”
Don was about to leave the church of forty people he had been so involved with for three years, but it use to be two-hundred people, something was not working, and God was calling him away to a Church of six-hundred, to start from scratch again, and all this at the age of fifty-nine? But he needed a Church that was daring enough to embrace this vision, not only in word, but also in deeds.
Still unemployed and living on the part-time wages of a Cracker Barrel waitress, God had blessed their money to survive on for one year, but this was about to change too. So many changes to walk this path, so many adjustments to reach this new level, so much renewing of the mind, thinking outside the Church Box, submitting and obeying God’s revelation as it came, ordering his steps into a greater realm. Christmas was almost here, and after that 2015. Don already knew that 2015 was going to be something special…something radical…something like a Caped Crusader saying: “Not in my city, devil. I arrest you in the name of Jesus. And I will put works and obedience with my words. Show me the way, Lord. Here am I.”
Batman? Maybe we need to learn something from the comic books. Stories of “super” heroes. Where are all the super-heroes of God? It does not come by us becoming super ourselves, but by us tapping into the One who is. Are we willing to pay that price? In comic books we see super heroes willing to defeat the super bad guys and save the people, save the city. We do have a super bad guy and his evil legions. OF COURSE, GOD’S TRAINING IS DIFFERENT THAN BATMAN’S, BUT ARE WE WILLING TO ANSWER SUCH A CALL?
This is the story of one who said yes, and these are the things that happened after I did. And God led me to others already saying yes, so I in turn could lead others to say, “YES”.
“THE ENCOUNTER III” > The story is written in fictional form, but it is not fiction, I am living this every day. Signed: Don.
Don was anxious to get a feel for downtown, but it was Wednesday and there was Church tonight. Nevertheless, he still felt led to do it, and if he was going to, then he had to do it right. “It’s not by might, nor by power, but by thy Spirit, Lord.” Have we forgotten what that means? I think we have.”
His coffee was half gone as he pondered, still setting in the dark and journal by his side. “I had forgotten, Lord. I know you have your remnant. You always have your remnant, but I don’t think they are around me. Who’s preaching it? I don’t hear them anywhere. You had to almost break my back to slow me down enough to hear. I hear ya, Lord. Push the plate back. Fast. I’m going out tonight on a spiritual walk-about. I will fast this whole day until sometime tonight…downtown…I’ll know when it is right. By thy Spirit, Lord. Have we forgotten what that means? If anything supernatural is going to come of this, I’m a Priest. I’m gonna do it right this time, Lord. I’m bringing back the ‘old ways’. The devil is going to know a ‘caped’, a ‘covered’, an ‘anointed’ crusader has come to town.”
“This is war, Satan. Yeah, that’s right, I’m talking to you. It’s no secret. You’ve heard my prayers. No sense being bashful about this. God is sending me into the streets of downtown and you already know it, already planning your devices and setting your traps. We might as well be honest about this, I see your face on a ‘wanted poster’ on every wall, and I’m God’s Bounty Hunter. I come in the name of the Lord, in his priesthood, and there will be sacrifice. I’m not the fool I used to be, Satan, when I used to fight you on your terms. I’m coming in the name of Jesus, and I’m coming for you. There will be sacrifices, and I will remember who the real enemy is. It is not my fellow-man, but it is you Satan. It is you. The evil running rampant in the streets is you. My fights not with them, my fight is with you. I fight ‘for’ them, to see you defeated in their life, and so I pray, and I fast, and I come to you in the power of a Priest, for what is a Priest of Christ about if it is not sacrifice? And what is love if it is not sacrificial? Have we forgotten, Lord? I think we have. Thank you for reminding me, Holy Spirit.”
Church service ran later than normal that night, and as Don climbed into his black 1990 Dodge Ram pick-up, it was already dark. He slammed the door, and then slammed it again because it did not always catch the first time. He sat there for a minute listening within, to his soul. He had not expected Church to run this late, did he still feel led to catch a bus downtown? He had studied it out on the Internet. He needed exact change, $1.75. The 10th street bus stop was closest to his home and it ran straight downtown. He would be walking the streets after dark, but there would still be plenty of lights and activity. He could pray at Monument Circle, get a feel for things, set on a bench in the Garden Center and watch people below, assuming he survived the bus trip.
“Yes, I still feel to go. Grab the lion by the throat and don’t look back.” He turned the key in the ignition switch and duel pipes rumbled to life. He liked the sound of that thunder, because that is the way he felt.
Part Three of “The Encounter” just starting! Not fiction but REALITY. Some times reality really can be stranger than fiction. Details below.
“The Encounter III”
Here is where our story becomes a REAL LIFE REALITY SHOW.
If you have read The Encounter I & II, then you know that Dan has a father-in-law named, Don. In the story, Cathy’s dad, Don, used to be a truck driver until a back injury ended his career at the age of 58. After surgery he spent time with two books while he was recovering, his Bible, and a book called: “Soar More / Flap Less”. His twelve month sabbatical with God, and the help of these two books changed his life, and like a caterpillar changing to a butterfly, in his cocoon a sparrow became an eagle! Don gained a supernatural perspective and his life would never be the same!
He was so impressed with the book that he bought a copy for Dan, but it sat for two years on a shelf unread, and Dan and Cathy did not know what to think about her dad’s new outlook on life. He was happier than ever but also said strange things, and took his life an unexpected direction. No longer a truck driver, he was destined to lower paying jobs, but why go downtown and work in a mall for minimum wages when he could have done security work making ten to twelve dollars an hour? Shouldn’t he go where the money is? Why stand at bus stops waiting on a Metrobus full of unknown, possibly dangerous people, when he had a vehicle of his own?
If you have read The Encounter I & II, then you know Dan finally ends up reading the book and it changes his life too. He found answers, and then God led him to write a story called, “The Little Bird that Couldn’t > Flapless”, which is what The Encounter II consist of, but now our story turns to DON. YOU SEE, DON IS NOT A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, DON IS ME! SURPRISE!!!
DON IS NOT A FICTIONAL CHARACTER. OUR FICTIONAL STORY JUST BECAME NONFICTION AND IS NOW A REAL LIFE REALITY SHOW!
AND HERE’S THE TWISTER. IF YOU’VE READ MY “ABOUT PAGE”, YOU KNOW DON GREW UP LOVING COMIC BOOKS. DON HAS ALWAYS WANTED TO EXPERIMENT WITH USING A COMIC BOOK ANALOGY IN WRITING A CHRISTIAN ADVENTURE STORY, AND I’M FINALLY GOING TO DO IT! 🙂
“DO YOU HAVE YOUR GOTHAM?” GOTHAM NEEDS YOU BATMAN, AND INDIANAPOLIS NEEDS ME!
So how is this going to work? I have been on a twelve month sabbatical with God. Much has been revealed to me during this time. I am about to invade downtown Indianapolis on a mission for God. I have a vision from God of being a “Caped Crusader”, to save the once holy lands from the enemy. My cape is the “covering” of God. He shall cover me with his feathers, and under his wings shall I trust.
It is my goal to keep these articles somewhere around 750 words, or less, but I may sometimes do more than one article in a day. I have already made scouting trips downtown, in the night, seeking God and the way he would have me enter in. The IndyGo- Metrobus adventure was a story in itself. I had never ridden one before, and I must say I was the only “white spot” on that bus that night, and during a time when racial tensions are, shall we say, rising?
My word count is at 570 and I must begin going. I will write my story as the fictional character “Don”, but know it is REALLY HAPPENING. I AM LIVING THIS. I’m on a mission from God to invade a city with God’s light, a Sword, a Light Saber if you will. I have a target from God. We’re making this personal!
After much walking around and prayer, I have a leading on the job I plan to target for employment and have begun to prepare. My employment will be kept “SECRET” until I am well established, so my employer can trust me that I won’t be “preaching” while he is “paying” me to do something else. Once I am established and have proven myself, I will reveal the “SECRET”.
I hope to have fun with this but at the same time it is a very serious endeavor. I will be a Caped Crusader for God, but what does it require to live that spiritual heroic lifestyle? Where does our “SUPER” come from that we might do exploits for HIM?
Let the adventure begin!!! When I next return, the style will be fictional, but the story will be REAL. Hope you enjoy, but more than that, I hope we all grow. Let us be inspired!
To be continued…
Gotham City! A place where crime is high, evil lurks in every corner, and even the police department and government officials are not to be trusted! In the midst of all this, what rises up out of nowhere but one Capped Crusader, to stand against the darkness in the night, and save his city!
Okay, perhaps that is being just a little melodramatic, but have you asked God for your very own personal Gotham City?
Whatever evil happens in Gotham, the Batman takes it very personal. This is his town, and he is here to save it! To protect the innocent, as his parents were when murdered that fateful night. Must we have such an extreme thing happen to us before we see the great need of our times? Because, believe me folks, extreme things are coming if we don’t start making a real difference now!
Have you asked God for your “target”. The eagle sets in the high places and spots his prey from afar. It is true we should be ready to seek and to save wherever we go, but do you also have a specific and very personal target? It should be something very important to you. Is it your family, something connected to a skill or talent you have, or the place where you work? Do you have a specific mission from God, for you to rise up like a Capped Crusader and crusade! Fight evil! Pray! Shine light! Give love! Speak the name of Jesus and come against every Joker, Riddler, Two-Face, and demon that sticks up its ugly head because this is your territory and you’re here to save the city! No one else is doing it, the times are desperate and bless God you’re going to become that person! In time, others will join you, and then your team will fight evil together, seeking to save that which is lost!
My life is in a reset right now, and God has given me some very specific targets. This has been a practice in my life for a long time, but since I am about to do it again, maybe I should share the action as it happens. After my back surgery, I discovered I would no longer be a truck driver. I knew everything was changing, so I went to God for new assignments.
First he had me remodel a room of our house and create “Prayer School”, which we have now changed the name to “Eagle Mountain”. At any rate, it is up and running, and there are some pictures of all that in this blog site, somewhere around April, May, June area. But here are the targets now.
1.) I’m about to go to my very first Writers Conference! Anderson University in Anderson Indiana. The money for the conference was not easy to come by, considering I’m not working, but God provided a wolf dog for me to babysit, (can you believe it?), for $100/week, and we made it! It happens at end of this month.
2.) I’m targeting downtown Indianapolis for my Gotham City! I’ve already done some nighttime runs on the IndyGo bus system, to learn how all that works. (And that was an adventure in itself. I think the “Time Master” tried to do me in, but a short run saved the day!)
I plan to get a job downtown after the writers conference is over, and I am targeting downtown as my main area to seek and to save that which is lost! Holy Cow Batman! I will try to write an article once and a while to let everyone know how this goes. I’m starting from scratch. I have no downtown connections or advantages of any sort to expect any thing special to happen, but that is exactly what I am expecting.
Now listen, if you think I’m making fun, I’m not! I plan to go into this city, highly trained, armed and dangerous against the devil! Light is a weapon against his darkness. Truth is a weapon against his lies. Love is a weapon against his hate. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal! But they are very real! And Satan knows it. Do you target a mission field with your God given talents, anointing, and weapons? If not you, then who?
There may be those who laugh at what I’m suggesting here, but at least I will be one doing something. So if you do laugh, I hope you are at least someone who lives like you’re on a mission for God, otherwise, maybe you should not be laughing?
Selah. (Pause and think about that.)
It’s time to take a short break from our developing story, “The Encounter”. At the top of my side bar you might notice a title of Comic Books, God, and Nature. Some might find fault that I put comic books before God in the title, but that is intentional, and for a reason. I have plenty of articles in which God is the main subject, and Christians the target, but I’m targeting a different audience with this one, and comics are the leading subject.
This is a conversation I wouldn’t mind having with other people who love comics and superheroes. I’m not talking about Archie, here. I grew up on a strange spiritual diet of comic books, my Bible, and isolation in nature, which meant these things just about had my undivided attention. Now as a Christian, I wonder how that affected me?
To this day I am adventurous, even at the age of 59, and I am adventurous for God. I still buy certain comics just to cut pictures out of them. Why? I tape them in my journal next to my accounts of the things I am doing. Why would anyone do a crazy thing like that?
Well, I happen to love things that inspire me to be disciplined in my goals for God. Batman may be fictional, but what he stands for is a hero very disciplined to saving his city. (He’s not perfect, and neither am I, but he tries hard.) Such a lifestyle inspires me, and I love the artwork. This is only one example. Most will probably write this practice of mine off as a very crazy thing, hopefully harmless, and definitely ridiculous, but I disagree. (About the ridiculous part, that is. LOL.)
If any one would like to have a conversation around this topic, the floor is open. If you want to know more of my story, I have written it on my “About Page”. Just hit the “About this site” button in the header bar. I’m just throwing this out there to see what might pop up. Curiosity getting the better of me.
