“Do You have your Gotham?” > Chapter Ten

THE ENCOUNTER III > This story is written as if fictional, but it is not, I’m living this every day. Have you heard a call in your heart saying, “Gotham needs You?” This is one man’s attempt to take up the mantle of being a Caped Crusader. I am caped in God’s Covering, and Indianapolis is my Gotham.

CHAPTER TEN

Don stood there on the cold sidewalk and staring at this strange parking meter device. He had already swiped his card twice and then proceeded to do something wrong, something out of order, only to have to start over again, and it was very cold! “When did parking become so complicated? Am I going to figure this out or not? If I can just get past this stupid meter the Library is right behind me and I can get inside. How is it we hear your voice, Lord? What made me think of Chris? How is it I find myself “downtown”, learning about this new place I do not know, and yet I sense it is going to play a part. Okay, machine, this is your last chance. It’s you or me. One of us is going to die here and it’s not going to be me! Finally! I’m not sure what I did, but it shows two hours of time. I’ll take it. And look who just pulled up behind me. Chris.”

It was a great reunion on that cold city sidewalk. The sun was shinning and made you feel good even if it was cold. “Hey, Chris, what is all that stuff packed in your minivan?”

“That’s our food pantry. It’s part of the outreach we do. Lets get inside and I’ll tell you all about it.”

Don was amazed as Chris escorted him into the renovated Central Library. He remembered the old Library and it was nothing to brag about, but this! This was awesome! The entry opened into a big gathering area complete with snack and coffee shop and tables. So they each ordered a coffee and sat down at a table to catch up on what had been going on with each of them. Chris was amazed to find out that due to a back injury, Don had been on a one year sabbatical with God and was just now beginning to venture out in what God was showing him.

Likewise, Don was amazed to find out Chris had become a “Church Planter” with Southern Baptist and currently had an outreach developing in an inner city apartment complex. In no time at all Don had found an open door to inner city ministry by aiding Chris in Church Planting! However, he also knew God had planted something of his own in him, and somehow these two visions could aid each other. Before they knew it an hour and a half had already passed and they had not even explored the Library yet.

From the open coffee shop area he could see the Library rising up six levels, but he had no idea what Chris was about to show him. As the tour began, Don was amazed. First he was shown probably five hundred computers with Internet access, and all of it free for the using! This was middle of the day and most of the computers were in use. These same people could just as easily go to his blog site! The one God had him specially prepare, “Broken Wings that Soar!” The potential was obvious! Chris pointed out that most inner city people have their day at the Library to do all their on-line business. He also explained how all the city Libraries are strategically located near IndyGo bus stops, which gave easy transportation to all the Libraries. Anyone could get there whether they had a car or not.

As excited as Don was, the tour was not over yet. On at least three of the floors were very nice meeting rooms, that could seat eleven at a time, complete with a large table and white board for teaching, and completely free for the use! What a facility to aid his outreach to inner city! But how would it happen? How would it work? As yet he did not know, but God had just added a new dimension to things, and if God had so easily and quickly done this, he would also do the rest.

When Chris and Don parted that day, Don was set to help Chris at his next meeting at the apartment complex. He was looking very forward to already having opportunity, and with a young man he had relationship with from many years ago as a youth minister. “You’re amazing, Lord. You had all this planned, didn’t you. How is it we hear your voice even though it is not an audible thing, and yet we do, there is no denying it. Unbelievers think we are crazy. Imagining things. But look what those crazy imaginings has led to. The chess board has moved again. Two more very important things coming up though. One, I need a job. The right job. Something that will be an aid to ministering, not a detriment. That won’t be easy, Lord. And two, my meeting with Pastor tomorrow. If something drastic don’t change there soon, I’ll start the new year in a new church. Let me hear your voice, Lord, so I can follow. Gotham needs me. Yes, even me.

“God’s Covering”

What is it called when one has forgotten what was long ago known, and with defeat or victory hanging in the balance, must remember…must relearn…must reknow?  Stand ye in the ways and see…and ask for the old paths…where is the good way…and walk therein…and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

What is this thing called: God’s Covering? Do we really need it?

YES! For only a Caped Crusader will have power in God!

Consider these scriptures: Isaiah 30:1-2 > “Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, BUT NOT OF ME, and that COVER WITH A COVERING, BUT NOT OF MY SPIRIT, that they may add sin unto sin: That walk to go DOWN INTO EGYPT, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the STRENGTH OF PHARAOH, and to trust in the SHADOW OF EGYPT.”

David knew of the COVERING of God when he wrote: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under THE SHADOW of the Almighty.” And three verses later when he wrote: “He shall COVER thee with his feathers, and UNDER his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”

In this day of American prosperity have we forgotten the COVERING of the Lord, for the love of money? Have we forgotten the young rich man to whom our Lord said forsake all? Or the disciples who were instructed to not even take an extra coat? Do we seek the COVERING of his shadow in which even the shadow of Peter, because of God’s COVERING, would heal the sick? Is this not the same Peter who said silver and gold have I none, but in the name of Jesus, rise up and walk?

Why am I targeting the sin of greed and materialism so much, for it is sure it is not the only vice robbing us of the anointing today and stripping our capes from us, leaving us to stand weak and ashamed. Love of money, lust, pornography, adultery, murder of babies…the list goes on and on…but so much preaching about MONEY. Be successful! Be happy! Live your dreams! And yet we are blind and naked, stripped of our capes, and do not even know.

King Saul’s army may be looking good right now, but David’s army is out there. They are moving behind the scenes and they have God’s COVERING! They have not gone to the world, to EGYPT for counsel! They have not gone to a medium, a witch for counsel! They have sought the Lord until the Cape of his anointing is upon them! David and his army of Caped Crusaders are out there, working behind the scenes, and when Saul’s army fails in a day, they will begin to rise!

Have you gone to EGYPT for your counsel? King Saul did not inquire of the Lord. David brought the Ark into Jerusalem after Saul and his army was dead, dead, and dead. A tragedy David wept over! And for Jonathon! A good man in the wrong army!

Oh, I don’t know if you even understand a word I am saying? Is your Pastor preaching EGYPT? Is your church seeking to COVER with a COVERING, but not of the Lord’s Spirit? And by so doing they add sin unto sin? If so, you are in the wrong army. You might even be a Jonathon in the wrong army. So sad. Come out from among them before it is too late! But must you be loyal to Saul? Just because he may have been a spiritual father to you?

Paul said, follow me as I follow the Lord. If I stop following the Lord, Leave me! Find someone who is! Find a David! Find God’s COVERING and be caped in his power again! Perhaps for the first time! Relearn, reknow, seek out the old ways of great spiritual forefathers! Leave this modern day EGYPT seeker!

Does your church seek worldly leadership? Do they glorify successful business men? Do they seek to learn from them? Do they run their church more like a business than the Kingdom of God? Do they seek strength from Pharaoh, and to trust in the SHADOW of EGYPT? IF SO, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! AND FIND A DAVID! FIND A PAUL FOLLOWING THE LORD!

Oh, I don’t know if you’re hearing me or not, with my silly Batman illustrations. Speaking of finding your Batcave, hearing your Gotham, donning your cape. Speaking of devotion, training, focus, and sacrifice.

They that do know their Lord, shall be strong…and do exploits.

“And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries:: but the people who do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” (Dan. 11:32)

WE ARE CALLED TO BE MORE THAN A GOOD PERSON. WE ARE CALLED TO BE A PRIEST LIFTING UP HOLY SACRIFICES UNTO HIM. FROM THERE SHALL ARISE CAPED CRUSADERS OF WHICH BATMAN COULD ONLY DREAM. DO YOU UNDERSTAND PRIESTHOOD EVANGELISM? DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

“Batman Theology”

Where do you go after preaching the message for every good Christian to lay down those sins that so easily beset us?

Why would I ask that? Because I have seen this happen so many times. People get convicted under the powerful anointing of God, they go to the altar and they repent. They leave the altar full of the junk they know God has been convicting them of, and now they have “empty places” in them. Empty places that act as voids. Mother Nature resists a vacuum and something will be sucked into those empty places.

But brother Don, won’t those places be filled with more of God? Not if that person does not make the effort, and many times they lack a certain vision mojo to make that effort, sad to say. Consequently, the void will keep seeking to refill the empty places, and many times things will be sucked in that are even worse than before, because now the person is disillusioned and sees no hope.

So what is this “training” that Paul speaks of? (II Timothy 2:21)

“If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.”

“And every man that striveth for the mastery…”  (I Cor. 9:25)

What’s supposed to fill those empty places? Could it be a vision of the fight? Did not David ask, “IS THERE NOT A CAUSE?” The GOOD FIGHT? Do we have a vision for it? Do we see the millions dying and going to hell, and the thousands in our own city? Is Gotham crying out to your deaf ears?

I know this is fictional but just humor me for a minute. Would Batman buffet his body and train himself to warrior elite if there were no fight? If there were no ultimate bad guys, no city to save, no tragedy of seeing his parents shot down in cold blood before his very eyes? Without those just causes would he ever have become the Batman? Why would he? Why work so hard and suffer such pain if their is no worthy fight to fight?

Have we lost the vision of the fight? In the realms of the spirit, only a Priest has power.

We are called to be more than just a good person, we have entered a Priesthood. The day the average Christian catches the vision of Priesthood Evangelism, we will turn this world upside down again! I have written more about this at 1000housesofhope.wordpress.com if you like to know more. Look in the footer for “Priesthood Evangelism”. Are you enough of a spiritual Bounty Hunter to seek such things?

“Where are the Caped Crusaders for God?”

I think my story is boring you. (Do You have your Gotham?) My numbers are dropping as you show me your disinterest. Ah, but you don’t know what is coming. You see, the journey is so important, and do you think it is easy to be a “Batman” for God? Oh but the “religious” are mad now. Did I really say a Batman? Yes I did. AT LEAST HE WAS WILLING TO PAY A PRICE FOR HIS CITY AND I DON’T THINK YOU ARE. SO JUDGE ME IF YOU WILL, BUT I’M FREAK’N TIRED OF UNINSPIRING BORING CHRISTIANS!

Oh, oh. Is honesty really the best policy?

Even though every little detail of the journey is so very important… and why? Because you might take such a journey someday and when certain things happen you might think you’ve missed God, when you haven’t. Let me give you an example. This has not come up in my “Do You have your Gotham?” story yet. Very few even know, but I’ve been very sick for three weeks now. Every time I think I’m better, something happens, like a big snow storm and I shovel my 82 year old dad’s drive out. I suck a bunch of cold air and end up very sick again. I’m on my third cycle of this thing and it would be easy to believe I’m missing God, if his voice were not so plain.

But how can this be God? If he wants this city reached, why would he allow me to be stopped by sickness for so long? I don’t know, but it is part of the journey and I know where it is going. You might be on a journey someday that has just as many unanswerable questions, but if you read my own story and pay attention to every step of the way, like the back surgery and loss of job that put me on this path, then you will know this is not uncommon. (Not uncommon at all.)

So I have prepared a treat for you. A glimpse of what I believe God has shown me is coming. It has not happened yet but it is the direction I am “slowly” moving. My journey has made progress, even progress the story has not revealed yet, and the ups and downs are so important! The prayers prayed or not prayed are so important if you are to really understand! So are you bored with the story? Or does the thought of being a true Caped Crusader, Capped in God’s Covering scare you? Is it a price you’re not willing to pray, so you want no knowledge of it? Actually, it might not be as bad as you think. God is good, and with his assignments come a ton of grace. Even to hear such a call as, “My Gotham needs me!”

So here is your glimpse. I have created another blog site. It is only a “Prototype”, not in effect yet. I’m sure it is not a perfect picture of the whole vision yet, but I have strong reason to believe this is where God is taking me in my effort to do my part in saving my city. I’m a nobody who dares to believe God can even use me. He will decide how big or small it becomes, but if you would like to see the vision that has come, while I have walked the streets of downtown and prayed prayers and sought God, then you can see what I currently have at 1000housesofhope.wordpress.com

“Do you have your Gotham?” > Chapter Nine.

THE ENCOUNTER III > This story is written as if fictional, but it is not, I’m living this every day. Have you heard a call in your heart saying, “Gotham needs me?” This is one man’s attempt to take up the mantle of being a caped crusader, caped in God’s Covering, for his city. Indianapolis is my Gotham.

CHAPTER NINE

“The downtown Central Library? Well, no, I have not been there since they remodeled. Isn’t that a ways for you to drive? Okay. Works for me. 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Got it. See you then.” Don clicked off the cell phone and sat back in his chair rather amazed. Facebook had been successful. It took a couple weeks to get back into it, and then send a “friend request” to the young man named Chris. It had only taken a few days and a meeting was now set, but Don had to wonder what God was doing?

In his younger days Don had been heavily involved with youth ministry. During those many years Chris had been one of the young guys he had worked with, but he was thirty years old and had a family of his own now. Over the years their paths had crossed from time to time, but the last crossing had been at least two years ago, and why had God brought him back to mind? How many other people he could have thought of, but no, it had been Chris, and now it was set.

Even more puzzling was the meeting place. Since Don was not working he had offered to meet any time and any place, and Chris lived north east of downtown by quite a ways. Why not meet at Castleton? Or Pendleton? “Hhmm, this is very curious, Lord. I haven’t said anything to Chris about my interest in downtown, and yet he wants to meet at the Central Library? Says he wants to show me what is available there. Okay, Lord. I know you’re doing something and I shouldn’t be surprised, right? After all, we have a lot of prayers going, and you are ordering my steps. I can hardly wait till Thursday!”

“Speaking of prayers, Lord. You know this Prayer Life Group that no one has been coming to? The one that has been at my house for months now. The one I remodeled the room for. What am I supposed to do with this? I’ve invited and invited. Everyone is too busy to pray! Well…okay, not everyone. I have enjoyed those early morning prayer meetings at Charity Church. Don, Rick, Pastor Paul, and a few others. It has been so precious. I’m not sure what I would have done without their prayer support on this downtown mission. It’s just not happening at the other Church, Lord. I’ve been there over three years and it’s just not happening for me at least. Maybe there is a change in the wind? I need to talk to Pastor. A lot of things are changing right now, as I am searching this new mission. Maybe that is going to change too? Guess I need to set another meeting.”

Flipping his phone open and searching the number, the call quickly goes forth. “Hey Pastor, how you doing today? Good. Hey, when can we get together and talk?”

Another meeting was set. So many pieces on the chessboard of life. This move, that move; this knight, and that castle. Strongholds over a city. Evil in the streets. A Dark Knight is invading in the cover of the unknown. This move, that move. This prayer, that prayer. Words spoken, prophetic visions, obedience and faith. What shall be the shape of this thing when all is said and done? It takes a seeker to find out. It takes a person willing to lay it all on the line and follow that voice no matter where it leads. But first it takes a person who can HEAR. Let him who hath ears, HEAR.

“Do you have your Gotham?” > Chapter Eight

THE ENCOUNTER III > This story is written as if fictional, but it is not, I’m living this every day. This is one man’s attempt to take up the mantle of being a caped crusader for God. I am caped in God’s Covering, and Indianapolis is my city. God says, My Gotham needs me.

Chapter Eight

The next time Don rode the bus back into downtown, he was ready, blog site cards in his pocket, and wouldn’t you know, it just happened a Christian Ladies Convention was in the city. Coming up an escalator he found the Panera Bread with a line backed clear out the door! “What in the world is going on?” He saw Bibles and Christian books in hands and on tables. In no time at all he had discovered an opportunity to hand out blog site cards, and so he did, but this was not really his target audience.

He only handed out a few before finding himself back in the Garden Center, sitting on a bench and watching all the moving people again. “What is it, Lord? What’s the next step? How do I reach those people? The ones not already carrying Bibles in their hands.”

He looked at his possible points of employment he had written down. As of yet he had applied at none, but it had to be downtown. Starbucks? Chick-fil-A? Subway? These were the main possibilities. If he wanted to meet people, and make connections, food offered his best chances. He was a little nervous about being the old man amongst so many young people, but he decided he could play the role of “grandpa” if needed, for surely that is how he would be seen.

“Time to get some more prayer power going,” he concluded.

Don was actively involved in a small church of around forty people, but he also had a close friend in another church who had asked him to join them for early morning 6:00a.m., Tuesday morning prayer. Now he had tried to get a prayer group going at his church, but so far it just wasn’t working, and here was another church asking him to join them, and so he would. It would not be easy at 6:00 a.m., a definite sacrifice, but Batman had his way to save a city, and so does the caped crusaders of God.

“Can’t get too much prayer. This has got to be soaked in prayer. I need your creative wisdom, Lord. I need my steps ordered of you supernaturally. People are tired of the same old kind of out reaches. Got to be something different, fresh, new, exciting, and especially anointed! My blog site is ready. I have this tool but it is not enough of itself. I don’t have the whole picture yet.”

Thinking about his own prayer time that morning, “What about Chris, Lord? Why did he come to mind when I was praying today? I haven’t seen that young man in at least two years. I wonder what he is doing now? Still selling insurance? You want me to find him? Hhmmm, I don’t know. He moved way out east and northward somewhere. Facebook? You want me to try facebook again? DO I HAVE TOO? Okay.”

Another manhunt. A connection lost in time. God’s bounty hunter would hunt and find as the pieces of the puzzle slowly come together. Soon…many pieces are about to fall, but first…more prayers.
